2018 Patterson Chardonnay Magnum
It has been many vintages since we introduced a new single vineyard Chardonnay to our range of wines. The Patterson Vineyard is a special site that debuts with the 2018 vintage. The most compelling facet of Patterson is the genetic material of the Chardonnay vines. The vineyard was planted with cuttings from our sister estate, Evening Land, in the Eola-Amity Hills of Oregon. These Chardonnay vines were originally brought to Oregon from the great Burgundy vineyards of Corton and Les Cailleret (in Puligny-Montrachet).
Like Sanford & Benedict and Bentrock, Patterson is a north-facing site. We cherish this aspect (especially for Chardonnay) as it slows sugar accumulation and prevents acidity from falling precipitously as harvest approaches. Patterson is the highest elevation site in the appellation - higher than Mt. Carmel and Rita's Crown, but unlike these sites, the soils are heavier, clay-based soils that yield a more texturally generous wine. We are thrilled with the finished wine and very excited to share the 2018 Patterson Vineyard Chardonnay with you.
